What is a Course Handicap?

A course handicap is the number of strokes you receive on a specific course. It adjusts your handicap index based on the difficulty of the course you're playing, measured by slope rating and course rating.

The Formula

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

The standard slope rating is 113. A course with a higher slope is more difficult for bogey golfers relative to scratch golfers.

Where to Find These Numbers

  • Handicap Index: Your GHIN profile or any golf handicap app
  • Slope & Course Rating: Printed on the course's scorecard, usually listed per tee box
  • Par: Total par for 18 holes (typically 70-72)
