How Does Match Play Work?

In match play, two players compete hole by hole. The player with the lower score wins that hole. If both players tie, the hole is "halved." The match status is tracked as "1 UP", "2 UP", etc. for the leading player. The match ends when one player is up by more holes than remain to be played.

Match Play Terminology

  • All Square (AS) — The match is tied.
  • X UP — A player leads by X holes.
  • Dormie — A player is up by the same number of holes remaining, meaning they cannot lose.
  • 3&2 — Won 3 UP with 2 holes left. The match ended early.
  • 1 UP — Won on the final hole by 1.

Match Play Strategy Tips

Match play rewards a different mindset than stroke play. A single disastrous hole only costs you one point, so aggressive play is often rewarded. Focus on winning individual holes rather than protecting your overall score. When you're up, play steady and force your opponent to make birdies. When you're down, take risks — you have nothing to lose.
