Get Started FreeStroke play is the most common format in golf. You count every stroke on every hole, and the player with the fewest total strokes wins. It's the format used in all four major championships and most amateur tournaments. Unlike match play, every shot matters — there's no resetting between holes.
Par is the expected number of strokes for a skilled golfer to complete a hole or course. Your "score to par" is the difference between your total and the course par. Shooting 75 on a par 72 means you're +3. Even par (E) means you matched the course par exactly. Under par scores are shown as negative numbers (e.g., -2).
