Get Started FreeIn best ball, each player plays their own ball for the entire hole. The team score is the lowest individual score. In a scramble, the team picks the best shot after every stroke and everyone plays from that spot. Scrambles are more collaborative, produce lower scores, and are ideal for casual events. Best ball rewards individual performance within a team setting.
Each player completes every hole playing their own ball. After the hole, the lowest score among the team members is recorded as the team score. For example, if your team of four shoots 4, 5, 3, 6 on a hole, the team score is 3. This format is also known as "four-ball" in Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup play.
All team members hit from the tee. The team picks the best drive and everyone hits their second shot from that location. This continues until the ball is holed. The resulting single score is the team score for that hole. Scrambles are the most popular format for charity tournaments because they're fun, fast-paced, and accessible to all skill levels.
In best ball, play aggressively when your partner has already secured a good score on the hole. In scrambles, strategy matters: have a safe player go first, then the rest can play aggressively off a safe lie. Pair complementary skills — a long driver with a strong putter, for example.
